The M1911 is a rugged, single action, direct recoil operated, semi-automatic pistol, fed from a 7-round .45 caliber magazine. It was designed for military use by John M. Browning, who also designed the .45 ACP cartridge for this weapon.
It was officially accepted as a conventional weapon of the U.S. Armed Forces on March 29, 1911, initially as a .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol, M1911. Beginning in 1924, the designation was changed to .45 caliber automatic pistol, M1911A1. In total, the Army purchased about 2.7 million pistols during its lifetime.
It was widely used in World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. It remained in service with the U.S. Army until it was replaced by the Beretta in 1985. Given its popularity, some models are still in production and are still used by some Special Forces, Navy and U.S. Marine Corps units.
